Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 20, 1879

Overview

An outing to Dommayer’s and Fantaisie brought unusually bright spirits, with the landscape and old memories of hope lending the day a nostalgic glow. R. especially enjoyed the roadside scenes and then turned the conversation to craft, discussing rhyme and musical prosody with characteristic precision.

Content

Sunday, July 20:

R. had a bad night; he thinks that, led into rashness by the happy mood at Dommayer's yesterday, he ate too much trout. I write letters, R. works on his article, also corrects his last one, with which he is pleased; writes to Sascha Ritter, starts legal proceedings against Herr Roeser, and writes to Herr Rühlmann about the MS. of Iphigenie en Aulide. The weather is bad again, but we have a cheerful evening with Gogol's The Government Inspector.
