Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 19, 1879

Overview

The narrator was overwhelmed by sadness, feeling drained by ordinary duties and stirred by news from Claire into a deep longing for an earlier, vanished world. She sought relief in reading, even finding the idea of convent life newly attractive, before recovering enough to laugh at herself by evening.

Saturday, July 19:

R. had a good night and arranged a drive to Dommayer's. I spend the morning at the photographer's, with the children. In the afternoon we drive via the Waldhütte to the Fantaisie, where we have supper in the best of spirits. Really I have never before seen the place looking so pretty as today, when we gazed upon it from the restaurant garden. R. enjoys sitting beside the highway, and with great delight he watches the haycarts passing by; we take a little walk through the Fantaisie itself, thinking of the times when we lived here and everything was full of hope - but then came the fulfillment!

As we were walking at the Waldhütte, R. spoke about his work and about rhyme - how Beethoven quite rightly constructed his theme in accordance with the first lines of the poem, but subsequently he had been unable to sustain the principle of correct stresses.
