Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 26, 1876

Overview

The final morning in Venice was devoted to the Accademia, and leaving the city felt painfully difficult, as though parting from something almost beyond human companionship. Bologna received them with a gloomy first impression, and the writer ended the day sadly transcribing the fleeting Venetian days.

Tuesday, September 26:

To the Accademia di Belle Arti. R. gave me pleasure by accompanying me there, as it is as difficult to part from these divine things as from Venice itself, which we leave at 1 o’clock. How very sad a city, in which those who dwell in it seem like worms, utterly alien to the noble, diversified body! But I did not contemplate this living element, seeing only the eternity; from few human beings have I found it harder to part than from this city, which went straight to my heart as I know no other will ever do.

Arrival in Bologna at 5 o’clock. Walk to the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele; gloomy impression. I write up the days in Venice here, melancholy that they were so fleeting.
