Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 25, 1876

Overview

The morning was spent moving from San Giovanni e Paolo to its adjoining hospital, where the sight of the sick in such beautiful surroundings left the writer unusually moved. Later visits to the Gesuiti and other churches brought intense pleasure in the paintings, while the children’s walks through the city were a bright counterpoint to the poverty in the streets.

Content

Monday, September 25:

In the morning to San Giovanni e Paolo, inspected it thoroughly, then to the splendid hospital adjoining it; strangely and unutterably moved by the sight of the sick people in these beautiful rooms! Then to the Gesuiti for [Titian’s] Saint Lawrence, after that the Saint Barbara of Palma Vecchio and the picture by Giorgione, then the Bellini picture in a small church.

The sacristan in the Gesuiti, the lower stage of the Döllinger type of person. These trips on foot with the children provide the liveliest pleasure, though in the streets hardly anything but poverty is to be seen. In the afternoon Santa Maria della Salute, and in the evening Piazza San Marco, where Prof. Hertel from Berlin joins us.
