Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 24, 1876

Overview

At Santa Maria dei Frari, the art and monuments prompted reflection on the differences between Renaissance sculpture and that of the eighteenth century. The day continued with a drive to the Giardino Papadopoli and an evening visit with Countess Voss, though R. was still unwell.

Content

Sunday, September 24:

On foot to Santa Maria dei Frari, fine impression [margin note: Titian’s Pala dei Pesari]. Reflected on the Renaissance and the 18th century; the latter, to judge by the tombs, with more feeling for the monumental, but less tasteful. On the whole I find little pleasure in Renaissance sculpture, with a few exceptions.

[Added at end of entry: The Great Elector by Schlüter finer than the very fine Condottiere here.] Drive to the Giardino Papadopoli. Spent the evening with Countess Voss; R. unwell!
