Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 25, 1876

Overview

Herr Kogel finally sings Hagen before R., an important test after much anticipation. The children’s preference for the first act of Siegfried delights R., since he sees their response as proof of the work’s folk character rather than its supposed obscurity. The day closes with lunch guests and an evening reception.

Content

Sunday, June 25:

Today Herr Kogel is at last to sing Hagen in front of R. The children liked the first act of Siegfried best of all, which pleases R., for it supplies proof of its folk character, whereas all the artists have up to now treated this first act as if it were quite incomprehensible.

Some people to lunch, reception in the evening.
