Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 23, 1876

Overview

R. remains exhausted and is troubled by his failing memory for names, unable even to recall Wilhelmj when he needs to. After overseeing the orchestra rehearsal and attending the second Siegfried piano rehearsal, he is annoyed by the conductors’ unflattering remarks about Unger. The narrator entertains the Countesses Usedom at home before R. joins them later.

Content

Friday, June 23:

R. still very run down, complains of completely losing his memory for names; recently he wished to refer to Wilhelmj, and the name eluded him entirely. He goes to the second rehearsal of Siegfried with piano, having supervised the orchestra rehearsal in the morning (Richter still knows little about the tempi) — “traces too many crochets,” says R.

I receive the two Countesses Usedom in the evening; R. joins us later, is annoyed that the conductors (Eckert, Levi) have so little that is pleasant to say about Unger.
