A second bass singer, Herr Kogel, pleased R. and left him content from rehearsal. The day's mood changed sharply when Mimi brought a newspaper notice of the writer's mother's death, which she first could not believe; Claire still could not be reached.

Tuesday, March 7:

Another bass singer, a Herr Kogel, with whom R. is very pleased. He returns fairly contented from the rehearsal. At noon, just as I am about to set out on calls, Mimi brings me a newspaper report of my mother’s death.

At first I am unable to believe it. Cable to Paris, receive no answer. R. tells me all the newspapers are reporting the same. Claire does not know my present address.
