R. had his first rehearsal today and was not exactly dissatisfied; it was only that the main singer completely lacks the ... and look at his lovely costumes for the Ring. They really are very lovely, of great variety, and simple, suggesting an entire civilization.
I myself should have preferred a more mystical impression. Everything too clearly defined visually is to my mind detrimental to the effect of the music and the tragic action, but if the visual aspect must be emphasized, it could not be done more beautifully or artistically.
I spend the evening with Mimi; R. listens to a Swedish bass singer.
