Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 24, 1876

Overview

R. sleeps better after deciding against Vienna, but the Jauner telegrams soon revive the uncertainty and lead him to suggest postponing the Lohengrin performance until fall. The rest of the day is split between orchestration, childcare, Hans’s letter from America, and a deep private grief that the writer keeps mostly unspoken.

Thursday, February 24:

R. had a good night, probably because of his decision not to go to Vienna. But now Herr Jauner cables to say that only the daily expenses are to be withheld from the chorus, and that he will discuss everything personally with R.

R. sends a telegram in the evening, asking whether it would not be better, since they do not dare charge high prices under present conditions and he is anyway feeling unwell, to postpone this performance of Lohengrin under his direction to the fall.

Apart from that R. orchestrates; I work with the children and in the evening receive a letter from Hans, who has decided to remain in America.

Will I ever, if only to my Siegfried, disclose the pit of sorrow which has been dug inside me? ... I believe that I shall dumbly take refuge in the land of silence! ... Thus amid tears I heard the lovely American march, which Herr Rubinstein played very beautifully by sight from the sketch.
