Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 23, 1876

Overview

The day brings troublesome correspondence from Aachen, whose committee makes awkward demands about using Vogl in June, while Vienna also seems increasingly unlikely. R. starts orchestrating the march only to rewrite the opening pages, and the strain is sharpened by exhausted funds and his rheumatic hand, though spring is near and Bon Quixote still fills the evening.

Content

Wednesday, February 23:

Correspondence with the music festival committee in Aachen, which boasts of having performed compositions by R. in ’57 and suffered much trouble on that account; for this reason they wish for Herr Vogl at the beginning of June!! ... R. annoyed with Vienna; journey there unlikely. He begins the orchestration of the march, but has to write the first two pages again!

Herr Feustel reports that the cash supply (for the undertaking) is exhausted. Vexation; on top of that R. has rheumatism in his right hand. Spring is approaching. In the evening Don Quixote.
