Tuesday, July 22:
Wrote to my father, inviting him to the roof-raising ceremony. R. works, and also writes a poem on “the moderns.”
After lunch to the Victory Tower with the children, then a rest in the woods, supper in the Bürgerreuth.
R. has once again to fend off a very amiable but stupid newspaper reporter, who has been given the task of writing an article for Die Gartenlaube, which must be kept completely objective. Good people call that being objective!
In the evening talked a lot about Daumer’s book; since it was published in Regensburg, it occurs to us that the Jesuits may have encouraged its publication in order to play a trick on the Grand Duke of Baden. Daumer himself is of course naive and has only been used. If this story, terrible as it is, only succeeds to the extent of making this German-minded Prince melancholy, it will in the eyes of these people have served its purpose.
Maybe they are also responsible for Dr. Julius Meyer’s work, in the hope of provoking Daumer. “Why is only evil wise and goodness so helpless and stupid?” “With regard to me it could also be exclaimed: Let not all hope vanish from your mind!” He says he often feels an almost uncontrollable urge to weep, and then he only looks quarrelsome!
