Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 21, 1873

Overview

The final entry returns to practical errands and correspondence, but its center is still intellectual and musical. Reading about Kaspar Hauser and discussing a theater ceremony sit beside thoughts of family and invitations, while a musical remark links Beethoven, Auber, and Schopenhauer. The overall effect is of a life in which daily logistics and high artistic reflection are continuously interwoven.

Content

Monday, July 21:

Twice to the new house in the morning; then wrote to the Americans. Read a great deal of Kaspar Hauser. Discussion about the roof-raising ceremony: shall we invite my father? Fidi out for a walk with his father. The trumpet!

R. is glad that in his 9th volume Beethoven follows Auber, and remarks on what one owes to Schopenhauer; since him, one has been able to speak freely on certain themes otherwise unattainable, such as music.
