Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Otto Wesendonck

June 20, 1853 · Zurich

Overview

Thanking Otto Wesendonck for his financial arrangements, Wagner repays 'an old debt' by sending Mathilde Wesendonck a piano sonata, his first composition since completing Lohengrin six years earlier.

Letter

Your arrangements, my dear friend, are admirable: I thank you with all my heart!

In order to enter upon my new indebtedness towards you in a way that is worthy and likely to inspire your future confidence, I am today repaying an old debt: give your wife the enclosed sonata, my first composition since the completion of Lohengrin (6 years ago!)

You will soon be hearing from me again: but first you must send me word as to how you are faring.

Yours,
Richard Wagner.
