Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Julie Ritter

Undated · Geneva

Overview

Writing to Julie Ritter in the midst of the Laussot crisis, Wagner says he is summoning his last strength to travel to Bordeaux, to see not Jessie but her husband Eugène: 'imminent death - or a new life' awaits him, and only the miracle of love can restore him.

Letter

My dear, beloved Frau Ritter,

You will already have received a letter from Karl a day earlier than these lines from me. Regard me as a dying man, for imminent death - or a new life awaits me: my strength is at an end, only the miracle of love can restore me to life.
