Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Unknown friend

July 10, 1882 · Bayreuth

Overview

Wagner denies a Berlin press report that he was reading Die Sieger aloud, explaining that he abandoned the Buddhist project on undertaking Parsifal.

Letter

Dear Friend!

It amuses me to have the Berlin Blatt controlled on certain matters. Here again is a notice, not a word of which is true. This seems especially impudent, considering the tone of assurance, as from a close friend. To a plot, outlined more than twenty-five years ago, I had given the name Die Sieger. Since undertaking Parsifal, I entirely abandoned the Buddhistic project (related in a weaker sense to Parsifal), and I have never since then had it in mind to do anything with it, much less to read it aloud.

Yours truly,
Richard Wagner
