Richard Wagner to Unknown friend

February 2, 1878 · Bayreuth

Overview

Wagner asks a music-publisher friend to borrow for him the orchestral and piano scores of a Brahms symphony, and reports that the first act of Parsifal is composed.

Letter

Dearest Friend!

I think you are connected with a music lending library? Would you be so kind as to procure for me Brahms's Symphony in orchestra and piano score for a short time on guarantee of the fees required? I'm not learning anything any more of what happens in the world and here you can't get such a thing. Continue being good to me and before I die you'll get from me something nice for your music publication. I now still continually need as much money as possible, for I have to cover so many expenses. The first act of Parsifal is composed.

Faithfully yours,
Richard Wagner
