Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Unknown friend

June 23, 1877 · Ems

Overview

Wagner comments wearily on Dr. August Förster's public pretence of having broken with him over the Leipzig Ring, and refers his correspondent to his letters to Förster.

Letter

Honored Friend!

I foresaw in the long run what now is happening and wanted to avoid it because all public declarations are loathsome to me. In this way, as I now learn, I have enabled Dr. Förster to pretend he has broken with me. After all, this turn of affairs means nothing to me—but if you want closer information, ask Dr. F. for my letters, especially the last ones from Bayreuth and the two last ones from London. More about this another time! Best regards. Faithfully yours,

Richard Wagner
