Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Lorenz von Düfflipp

June 24, 1877 · Ems

Overview

Wagner sends Lorenz von Düfflipp a document for the King with the manuscript of his new poem, and proposes to spend a week in Munich in July to settle the transfer of the Bayreuth festival performances.

Letter

[...] May I beg you most respectfully to present His Majesty the King with the enclosed very dutiful document and the accompanying MS. of my latest poem? In respect of the manuscript, I am somewhat apprehensive that the fair copy of the original which my dear wife has made may, despite great clearness, prove too small for His Majesty's convenient perusal; in that case a further copy may be necessary, which I would beg you to put into the hands of some very discreet and reliable person. In the hope of bringing the questions anent the transfer of my Bayreuth Dramatic Festival performances and allied matters to a definite conclusion by personal discussion and negotiations, I have decided to spend the third week of next month (July) in Munich and to devote the whole of that week exclusively to discharging these affairs. Will you be so very kind as to let me know whether I shall be welcome at this time, and whether I shall be able to meet the necessary parties to the discussion?

This will be my last attempt to bring my inexpressibly great exertions to some satisfactory issue, satisfactory, that is, in respect of the business itself, even though hardly so to me. [...] The question then will be [...] how far His Majesty may be pleased to support that conception of a wider national culture embodied in my Bayreuth enterprise. As I am dependent in a very special sense on an act of "grace," the effective power of this grace must not be forestalled in any quarter, and accordingly I make it my duty to wait in patience till the time appointed for the royal decision to be intimated.
