Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 16, 1871

Overview

Wagner spends the morning on corrections, which frustrates Cosima because she wants Götterdämmerung to advance, though his mind remains creatively engaged. Marie Schleinitz supports the foundation stone plan, but Brandt, Kathchen, and other practical certainties remain absent. Cosima is worn down by constant childcare, and the evening closes with only a little Carlyle.

Content

Monday, October 16:

Richard spends the morning on corrections, to my sorrow, since I should prefer to see him getting on with Goetterdaemmerung. But this is still occupying him; he is even thinking of the third act, and yesterday ran back upstairs, though he had already broken off, because “the right thing had just come” to him.

Letter from Marie Schleinitz, who is very much in favor of the laying of the foundation stone. But no news from Brandt, none from Kathchen, nothing which could be regarded as definite. I am constantly with the children, which tires me greatly. In the evening still a little Carlyle.
