Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 15, 1871

Overview

Letters from Cosima's mother and Pohl bring mixed news, with Pohl creating difficulties. Wagner notices the dying insects with pity and wonders why poets prefer fading flowers to such small lives. Walks with the children, joy in Fidi, an English offer of help for Bayreuth, and Wagner's agitation over corrections shape a busy but strained Sunday.

Content

Sunday, October 15:

Letter from my mother; also from R. Pohl, who is making difficulties. The dying gnats and flies arouse R.’s pity; he cannot remember any poet’s having written about this, usually they talk only of fading flowers.

Walked a lot with the children. Fidi splendid, gives me much joy. An Englishman, Mr. Sweet, offers his services for the Bayreuth venture. R. works, but is very agitated, since he has so much to do, correcting.
