Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 14, 1871

Overview

A kind birthday letter from Clemens to Loulou arrives as Wagner continues his work. He identifies his and Cosima's shared intensity, each devoted almost irrationally to a single aim. Kathchen's delay in coming leaves both of them discouraged, especially with Cosima exhausted and feeling unable to help Wagner enough.

Saturday, October 14:

Clemens Brockhaus writes very nicely to Loulou. R. works. As I greet him around noon, he exclaims, “You and I are in fact doing the same thing, devoting ourselves like mad people to one single aim, and that is absurd!”

Kathchen writes that she cannot come for another five weeks, which upsets R. very much. He writes to Hedwig Neumann, asking her to get things settled. God knows, I am very tired, and regret being able to do so little for R. Fire in the rooms.
