Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 13, 1871

Overview

Wagner works diligently after a bad night while Cosima is almost wholly absorbed by the children. Money from Mannheim helps pay Hermine, and Liszt's pleased response to Cosima's letter provides a gentler family note. An evening of songs with the children becomes comic when Fidi joins in loudly, while Littre's remarks about Germany in the Revue Positive provoke irritation.

R. works diligently, although he had a bad night. I nothing but children, but wrote a few lines to Claire. Mannheim sends money for Kienzl, which is used to pay Hermine. Letter from my father, who seems to have got pleasure from mine.

In the evening sang songs with the children, and Fidi joined in roaring, which made us all laugh loudly. My mother sends a copy of the Revue Positive, in which the notable scholar Littre says the same silly things about Germany as any ordinary Frenchman.
