Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 26, 1871

Overview

Wet mild weather keeps the household in practical routines with the children, while their studies slip amid washing and care. Tausig's father reports that he lacks the Tristan und Isolde score Cosima sought, apparently because it has been stolen. The day ends pleasantly with the nephews and with Wagner singing and playing the Vassals' Call, whose power makes a demonic impression.

Tuesday, September 26:

Wet but mild day. Much washing with the children; their studies a little neglected. Letter from Tausig’s father; he does not have the score of Tristan und Isolde for which I asked. It seems to have been stolen!

Pleasant afternoon and evening with our nephews; R. sings and plays the “Vassals’ Call,” which makes a daemonic and powerful impression.
