Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 11, 1871

Overview

An eye specialist attributes Cosima's trouble to nerves, and the day continues with children's purchases and an intellectual evening at the Brockhauses. Richard challenges Czermak's careless treatment of Schopenhauer despite his scientific interests. Nietzsche's rededication of a work once offered to Cosima strikes her and Richard as a troubling sign of duplicity beneath his gifts.

Thursday, May 11:

To the eye specialist Ceccius on account of my eyes; he says the affliction is of nervous origin. Then purchases for the children.

In the evening a party at the Brockhauses’, with Prof. Ebers, the Egyptologist, and Prof. Czermak, with whom R. converses about his pamphlet on colors, which he sent to us at Tribschen. R. reproaches him for having written too thoughtlessly about Schopenhauer, to whom he does after all ascribe prophetic gifts.

I learn this evening from Clemens Brockhaus that Prof. Nietzsche has now dedicated his Homer, which he once dedicated to me, to his sister, and with the same poem. I had to laugh at first, but then, after discussing it with R., see it as a dubious streak, an addiction to treachery, as it were, as if he were seeking to avenge himself for some great impression.
