Friday, May 12:
Visited Prof. Czermak’s auditorium, which he, though now mortally ill, had built; also his house, there meeting his Jewish wife. Little pleasure from any of this.
The most pleasure from contact with the family: Hermann charming in both character and intelligence, Ottilie original and good, showing decided resemblances to R. in character.
In the afternoon Prof. Ebers giving us a lecture with pictures of Egypt; he is a Jew and his talk is shallow and facile. Family evening with a discussion between R. and Hermann about beauty, which R. claims has vanished forever from the world, while Hermann, optimistically stressing the greatness of our times, confidently expects these to achieve beauty as well.
