Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 9, 1871

Overview

Daniel's birthday and family memory frame a day of purchases for the children and news that the King will give money to the project while keeping his distance. Richard reads Nicht kapituliert to young professors, carrying his public German stance into a social setting. News that Schure is retreating from politics lets them read the Commune as a brutal corrective.

Tuesday, May 9:

Today Daniel would have been 32 years old. Grandmama was also born on this day.

We wander, R. and I, through the city to make purchases for the children, who write me sweet letters. Councilor Dufflipp has now also written; the King will give 25,000 thalers toward our venture, but otherwise wants nothing to do with it. He is upset by the infallibility movement and is engaged in so much that his budget is completely committed.

In the evening a party consisting of young professors, to whom R. reads his Nicht kapituliert. Schure’s brother-in-law, Nessler, a musician whom R. met by chance in the street, says that Schure intends to have nothing more to do with politics. The Commune has taken care of that!
