Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 8, 1871

Overview

Cosima visits Daniel's grave with Elisabeth Krockow and is overcome by grief, guilt, and questions about her brother's suffering and possible survival in her children. The cemetery casts departure from Berlin into a dreamlike awareness of mortality and vanity. Leipzig then receives them warmly, and the Brockhaus household provides a deeply comforting evening.

Monday, May 8:

Early in the morning drove, with Elisabeth Krockow, to the cemetery, where I visit Daniel’s grave. Somber mood; he was the victim of my father’s and mother’s thoughtlessness and the cruel indifference of Princess Wittgenstein. At the time I was too young and inexperienced to oppose them effectively and take firm measures.

Much soreness of heart standing at this grave; where are you now, my brother, whither are you wandering, where is your pure spirit suffering or resting? In my soul you live on; have my children, Siegfried perhaps, absorbed your being?

Spoke about him with Elisabeth, who knew him well. Then departed from Berlin as if in a dream; all is vain to those who have looked upon death. At 5 o’clock arrived in Leipzig and were cordially welcomed by the Brockhaus family, with whom, Querstrasse 15, we spend a delightful evening. Ottilie and Hermann beings beyond compare.
