Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 27, 1869

Overview

Richard's correction appears in the Signale, followed by a sentimental Jewish admirer whose protest against Judaism in Music renews discussion of the pamphlet. Cosima's strained eyes, Breslau attacks, Plato, and the children fill the day, and Richard is touched to find her showing the children Ring pictures. His happiness in their domestic scene becomes the day's emotional center before Hippias Minor in the evening.

Content

Saturday, March 27:

[In the margin: “Whoever desires the beautiful must endure much.”]

In the morning R. brings a new issue of the Signale, containing his correction. Then a pamphlet by a sentimental Jew, an admirer of Rich.’s, but indignant about Judaism in Music. At lunch spoke about this and then once more mainly about Plato.

My eyes are much strained, perhaps from the embroidery. Breslau sends us a fifth article!

In the afternoon I take the children downstairs and show them pictures, Ring des Nibelungen. R. returns home, finds us together, and is pleased by the sight. He tells me I can have no idea how happy he is. Read in the evening, Hippias Minor.
