Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 21, 1871

Overview

Richard reads Cosima the beginning of his new work, which she values for its truth regardless of its Berlin reception. With Bayreuth uncertain, they consider Strassburg, even as news of another theater concession there irritates them and Peters's payment eases finances. Work, children's play, Robinson Crusoe, and Raimund's Bauer als Millionar give the day its domestic and literary shape.

Content

Tuesday, March 21:

R. reads me the work he has begun; it is wonderfully fine, and it seems to me to matter not at all whether it makes an impression in Berlin, the main thing is that it should be said.

If Bayreuth is refused us, we shall think of Strassburg; and we have just read in the Illustrirte Zeitung that Herr Cerf, the name says everything, has received permission from the German Emperor to build a theater in Strassburg.

Peters sent the 1,500 francs. Otherwise nothing but work and play with the children; R. declares that physically I am not up to it, but I think I can manage it, and it is what I wish.

Going through Robinson Crusoe for the second time, now with Boni.

In the evening we read Raimund's Der Bauer als Millionar, one of the earliest impressions in R.'s youth. We enjoy it very much.
