Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 20, 1871

Overview

Boni's birthday is observed despite headaches and the household's sensitivity to any disruption. Richard describes their life as alien to the outside world, sustained only by love and children while official silence from the King and Hohenlohe continues. Cosima visits Countess Bassenheim, speaks of protecting the children's cheerfulness from her sorrows, and retreats early with pain.

Monday, March 20:

Celebrated Boni's birthday as well as possible.

R. and I both have headaches; the slightest change in our way of life upsets us. R. said yesterday: "This life is like being at a fair, strangers everywhere, one belongs nowhere. We draw nourishment from ourselves; what makes us happy is our love, our children. That is why the air outside is hostile to us, no one understands us. To them all we wish for is madness."

The King keeps silent, also Prince Hohenlohe, who could really put us in his debt. I go to Countess Bassenheim's with Boni, find there the pleasant wife of Archduke Heinrich.

I informed the Countess of my worries concerning her daughter and tell her how I have succeeded, with much exertion, in never letting the children see anything of my sorrows, so that they may preserve their childish high spirits.

Early to bed on account of my severe headache.
