Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 1, 1871

Overview

Nietzsche's illness and Schure's anti-German pamphlet darken the day just as fears linger over French compliance with the capitulation. A trip into Lucerne brings news that thousands of French soldiers will be interned in Switzerland, throwing the town into agitation. The household returns to its regular evening reading of Gibbon amid this unsettled public mood.

Content

Wednesday, February 1:

Our friend Prof. Nietzsche is ill; the other friend, Schure, sends us a raging pamphlet, by himself, attacking Germany.

We still fear French treachery regarding the capitulation. We drive into town and learn there that 85,000 French soldiers are coming to Switzerland, and Lucerne will have to take 5,000 of them. Immense excitement in the little town.

In the evening, Gibbon as usual.
