Tuesday, January 31:

The German Emperor's fine telegram; R. and I are aglow with hope, may Heaven send us blessings! A tenor, Schleich, asks for an attestation that the role of Lohengrin cannot be sung when one has catarrh; R. gives it to him.

R. has been composing coronation marches during the night; he is thinking a little about it because of the money. He replies to his friend Alwine Frommann and describes his life with me in a way which I do not know what I have done to deserve.

How could I complain of life, when it has brought me so much more happiness than I could ever deserve? If all the world's sufferings had stormed me, I should have had no cause to complain, and now that I see R. in high spirits and the children well, I could spend all day in prayers, expiations, thanks!
