Tuesday, May 10:
R. writes to friend Wolz and tells Neumann that in this case an amputation will be necessary. A small young man whom he saw taking care of things in the Hotel de Rome pleased him so much that he wants to engage him as a 'groom,' and this morning he speaks to his father.
Lusch's and Boni's first nursemaid visits me; many memories - very touching that she joined the crowd lining the street to see us drive up for Rheingold. Then for me Dr. Herrig and poor, oblivious Herr Jäger!
We breakfast with Seidl at the Schleinitzes', after which R. goes to an artists' dinner in the Hotel de Rome, which to his annoyance turns out to be a Jewish family-hotel dinner. In the evening we receive old Prof. Werder, whom R. holds in most cordial memory, Helmholtz, the Niemanns (he will not sing, for reasons we do not quite understand), etc. At last, at 11 o'clock, we are at the station with Lusch and take our departure.
