Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 20, 1880

Overview

Though R. had slept well, the oppressive weather and a pain in his chest stopped him from going out and drove his thoughts back to Venice. He took solace instead in Count G.’s book, reading aloud scenes of death and artistic rivalry that continued to delight him.

Saturday, November 20:

R. slept well. Much arranging for me. He tries to go out but gets a pain in his chest.

The heavens press down on us, heavy and leaden-gray; R., all but exasperated, talks of Venice.

Count G.'s book continues to give him pleasure, however. He reads to us the scene of Properzia's death and the scene between Titian and Aretino.
