Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 2, 1880

Overview

Despite a bad, restless night, R. ventures out briefly until the harsh wind drives him back, though a photograph of the Sistine Madonna absorbs his thoughts. He thanks the King in verse for the flowers, and in the evening Joseph pleases and moves us both with what R. recognizes as true style.

Tuesday, November 2:

Bad, restless night; all the same R. goes out in the morning, but soon returns on account of the wicked wind; however, on his short walk he sees a photograph of the Sistine Madonna, and that fills his thoughts.

He writes a few lines of verse to the King for the flowers, and in the evening we see quite a good performance of Méhul's Joseph, a work which both moves and delights us. That is style.
