Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 15, 1880

Overview

R. read aloud from Wilhelm Meister to point out its whimsical style, then guided us through the pictures in San Sebastiano from memory dating back to 1858. The evening at Princess Hatzfeldt’s was cheerful with all the children, and while Mimi and R. playfully enacted Walther and Eva during the Meistersinger Prelude, he later confessed he could not bear hearing his own music.

Content

Friday, October 15:

R. reads to us the beginning of a letter from Wilhelm Meister to the Abbot, to draw our attention to the whimsicality of its style. We go to see S. Sebastiano, and it is R. who shows us the pictures in it, which he remembers from the year '58.

In the evening a pleasant hour at Princess Hatzfeldt's with all the children; while Rub. plays the Meistersinger Prelude, R. acts out the scene between Walther and Eva with Mimi. When we return home, he tells me he cannot bear listening to his own music.
