Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 14, 1880

Overview

R. laughed over a dream in which I had sent him a twelve-page critique of the Nibelungen, and we set out in excellent spirits for a bright day. A trip to Murano brought his mockery of leaving Venice at all, irritation at the cathedral, serious attention to Bellini’s painting, and later a lively evening of Beethoven and Goethe colored by his sharp observations.

Content

Thursday, October 14:

R. dreamed that I had had many objections to make concerning the Nibelungen and that I described my doubts in a twelve-page letter to him. Much amused by this absurdity, we embark on a splendid day.

In the afternoon a trip to Murano, which brings many jokes from R., since he finds it ridiculous to leave Venice to see Murano; the cathedral makes him downright indignant, but Bellini's picture, particularly the Doge in it, attracts his earnest attention.

In the evening Rub. plays the Eroica under R.'s very lively instruction, and afterward I read “The Children Next Door” from Elective Affinities. Certain words used by Goethe, such as Societät, strike R. again and again as signs of his curious dependence.
