Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 6, 1879

Overview

R. remained weak after a restless night and mostly stayed in bed, while the family awaited and then entertained friends whose lively talk helped lighten the mood. He read about an African journey, dismissed the latest books with distaste, and spent little energy beyond conversation and resting.

Content

Thursday, November 6:

R. had a restless night, but he comes down to say goodbye to Richter, who, the complete Tribschen youth again, tells us many amusing things and is inexhaustible, particularly on the subject of the Israelites. At lunch with friend Gersdorff, R. remarks that he has regained his appetite and does not know why! Great concern about Frau Feustel, who is seriously ill with typhus.

R. does nothing all day except read the account of the African journey. New books sent to us arouse nothing but astonishment and disgust.

In the evening we have conversation with our friend Gersdorff.
