Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 7, 1879

Overview

After a good night, R. was in a bright mood and worked on his article while Lusch copied it. The day was full of joking conversation, cheerful social news, and a final remark that he could no longer write anything serious because everything grave now seemed absurd.

Content

Friday, November 7:

R. had a good night, the heavens are bright, his mood also, and he works on his article, which Lusch is copying. There is a constant stream of jokes with friend Gersdorff, whose amorous affairs enliven our lunch table, and the news that Dr. Dühring is not dead increases our gaiety still further.

Herr v. Bürkel writes that the King was very willing to allow Herr v. Stein admittance to the special performances, which, it seems, have turned out very well. In the evening there is conversation with friend Gersdorff and Frau von Staff; we come to talk of friend Rubinstein, always a painful topic!

When I bring R. the copy of his article, he asks me whether I have read the “predigested tea” - he wrote it for me, and anyway he can only make jokes now, he says; serious things seem to him too absurd.
