Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 16, 1879

Overview

R. was restless, getting up often and catching cold, while his thoughts stayed fixed on a letter to Herr v. Weber. The speaker’s own mood sinks under autumnal melancholy, worries about age and vivisection, and the strange appearance of a bat in the salon deepens the uneasy atmosphere.

Content

Tuesday, September 16:

A poor night! R. gets up frequently and catches cold in the process. His mind is occupied with his letter to Herr v. Weber. Is it autumn, is it the approach of old age, is it my preoccupation with the dismal subject of vivisection which so overwhelms me with melancholy? It is certainly because R. does not feel well; he goes to bed at 6 o’clock and at first feels better, but his mind is restless, all kinds of mishaps disturbing his sleep.

During the evening, when I was in the salon, a bat once again fluttered around me with its heavy flight.
