Monday, September 15:
R. did not have a very good night; he also dreamed that I “offended” him, something to do with the earlier relationship with my father! But he recovers his spirits and tells me he has read an American story in Loldi’s magazine and begun his article for the November issue.
I occupy myself with friend Wolzogen’s article, which is really unique. In the evening, when I come down to R., I find him busy reading a pamphlet by Dr. Hammer, which interests him to the highest degree. We read it together in the evening and take pleasure in the language and outlook of this doughty man. But the glance one is thereby forced to cast on human affairs is so horrifying that one feels with one’s whole soul the wish to take leave of a world in which no crime is too terrible.
