Sunday, September 14:
R. had a good night; the meeting with the French people leads us to his time in Paris, the most wasted years of his life, then Vienna, and, finally and worst of all, the three weeks in Zurich: “The King came along when I was at my wits’ end,” says R. Very fine weather, he corrects his article.
In the afternoon we drive out to the Waldhütte, visit the caves; a very nice walk, but somewhat too long. Worry about Eva and about R. During a rest at the inn, R. talks about his wild youth, also tells us how in his childhood, recovering from an illness, he had said, “Things are not quite right with me,” which made people laugh.
Whist in the evening.
