Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 22, 1879

Overview

The day is dominated by failed negotiations, sleeplessness, and a doctor’s reluctant opinion that a cure should not begin because bad weather is approaching. Amid the frustration, the household still finds humor in absurd medical suggestions and ends the evening in conversation about miners, labor violence, and the moral horror of their suffering.

Tuesday, July 22:

Another restless night! . . . Letter from Dr. Schron in Naples: the Villa Maraval is no good either, too far from Naples. Five months of negotiations with nothing to show for it but a threatened lawsuit! R. works on his article, with telegrams back and forth with my father about the title of an opera by Hiller!

In the afternoon Dr. Landgraf; R. is not to start his cure because bad weather is on its way! Much laughter about this, as also about the suggestion that R. send his extra bottles of Rakoczy water to the town hall to maintain the water supply! In the end he says to the doctor, “My dear doctor, if you are feeling ill, come to me - I now know all the tricks and dodges!”

Conversation in the evening with the upright men, Rub. and Wol. Friend Wol. tells us about a miners’ revolt in Silesia, due to attempts to reduce their pay; the lancers attacked them, four men dead. Miners! The most wretched of human beings - people shoot them - and we call ourselves Christians! R. wrote to Dr. Schron.
