Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 5, 1869

Overview

Richard dreams Cosima must go to Munich looking worn out, and his concern for her eclipses his own illness. Pusinelli's mistaken congratulations on an engagement to Doris Brockhaus add comic absurdity, while family lunch, puppets, magic lantern, dominoes, lotto, and the arrival of Kant for Christmas fill the day. Cratylus is attempted again, and Cosima writes to her mother.

Sunday, December 5:

R. dreamed that I had to go to Munich and I looked so worn out. His concern about this dream, he says, took his mind entirely off his own condition. Yesterday his old friend Pusinelli wrote to him from Dresden, congratulating him on his engagement to Doris Brockhaus.

R. works, I play puppets with the children. Large and merry family lunch. Arrival of Kant’s works for R. at Christmas. Toward evening magic lantern, dominoes, lotto with the children. In the evening a further attempt to finish Cratylus. (Wrote to my mother.)
