Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 5, 1878

Overview

Wagner’s leg grows more painful, yet he remains cheerful and useful, even easing worries about Lulu. The day is marked by photographs, continuing troubles over the capital loan, and a favorable passage from Renan that reinforces his optimism about religion and human development.

Sunday, May 5:

R.’s leg getting more painful. I go to the studio to have Fidi photographed in his suits. R. lifts a weight off me with regard to Lulu!

The capital loan is still causing difficulties. And so “spring’s behest” is by no means blessed just now as far as we are concerned, even though, through all our troubles, R. remains cheerful and communicative. For instance, he reads me a passage from the end of Renan’s The Apostles which pleases him greatly, to the effect that in a nobler state of humanity the capabilities of religion would also be strengthened.

The “cuckoo’s eggs laid in our nest,” as R. calls them, are proving troublesome.
