Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 6, 1878

Overview

Despite the worsening pain in Wagner’s leg and his worn appearance, the family’s activities continue with photographs and a short outing to the summer house. Being together briefly dispels dark thoughts, and the evening is calmed by reading the first act of Die Perlenschnur.

Eva also photographed. But in spite of all these activities which I enjoy so much, since they are connected with the 22nd, my outlook is very gloomy, for R.’s leg grows increasingly painful, and he looks very run down.

The children wheel him to the summer house, for the first time; high above us joy continues to hover, though the ground remains in darkness, for R. is so cheerful, and we have only to be together two seconds for all disagreeable thoughts to fly out of the window.

In the evening I read the first act of Die Perlenschnur, with great satisfaction.
