Saturday, May 4:

R. had a tolerable night, but his ailment is taking a long time to clear up, and even spring is now proving a burden to him, since he cannot enjoy it properly. He is still working, however.

I hold a rehearsal with the children in the schoolhouse. During that time R. writes to Dr. Jauner and to friend Richter, saying he would like them here to study Siegfried. As a result of coaching, friend Seidl tells me, Herr Jäger is turning out very well.

Conversation about R.’s experiences in the theater: he says he has always got along well with orchestral players and singers, but never with conductors, managers, stage directors, etc. Restored to each other again, we discuss our “lengthy past” - 14 years! “The second period of your life, the third of mine.” I: “I did not live at all before.” He, jokingly: “And all I did was compose.” Lulu is causing me concern.
