Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 24, 1877

Overview

A good night for R. lifts the household spirits, even though the writer sleeps poorly from worry and dreams of a medical crisis. The day also includes reflections on love and labor in later life, plus pleasure in continuing the historical play and in exchanging wedding rings after many years of marriage.

Saturday, November 24:

R. had a good night, mine was disturbed by worry! I was awakened from sleep by a dream. I heard R.’s voice asking me, “Have you ever heard that I have got dropsy?” Much praying and beseeching on my part for the scarcely appreciated pleasure of his good night.

Recently, R. told me about his method of working, and observed that only in old age could one love and work at the same time! In the evening the second and third acts of Henry VI, Part I. Wonderful the scene between Mortimer and his nephew; it is usually omitted in present-day stage performances of the play. R. was married 41 years ago; we play with our wedding rings. I am wearing his, which he wore for 30 years!
