Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 23, 1877

Overview

R. has another poor night, prompting concern and a visit from the doctor, though the doctor does not appear alarmed. Work is then limited, and the evening is absorbed by Shakespeare and by a troubling letter about attacks on English musicians, which the writer barely registers because of anxiety over R.'s health.

Friday, November 23:

R. again had a very bad night. I should dearly like to ascribe it to the foehn weather, but my concern makes me call the doctor. He does not seem at all alarmed. R. finishes Gurnemanz’s narration; however, at my request he does no more work.

In the evening, the first act of Henry VI, Part I. Dannreuther writes to say that Hans has once again made an unaccountable attack on English musicians; but my worry about R.’s health makes me impervious to everything else. Thus is one saved by one worry from another!
